A Spring highlight: Charlton Kings in Bloom Plant Sale

One of the real highlights of Cheltenham’s gardening calendar each year is the Charlton Kings in Bloom Plant Sale – a much-loved community event that brings together local growers, gardeners and anyone with a soft spot for plants.

Run by the volunteer-led Charlton Kings in Bloom, the sale has been taking place for many years and is one of the group’s key annual fundraising events. Every penny raised goes back into planting and caring for green spaces across Charlton Kings – from spring bulbs and planters to seasonal displays that brighten the village throughout the year.

Usually held in May outside the King’s Hall, the plant sale is a brilliant opportunity to pick up a wide range of locally grown plants – including vegetables, herbs and herbaceous perennials – all grown by local gardeners. Prices are intentionally accessible, often starting from £1 or £2, making it easy for anyone to get growing at home.

But it’s more than just a plant sale. Alongside the stalls, there are often extra activities and advice available – from seed swaps and composting tips to informal chats with experienced growers and local groups. It’s a relaxed, friendly space where people can share knowledge, pick up ideas and feel part of a wider community of people who care about plants and nature.

Events like this are a great reminder that community growing is already alive and well in Cheltenham – and that small, local actions can add up to something much bigger.

If you’re looking for inspiration, a few new plants, or simply a good conversation about gardening, it’s well worth a visit.

This year’s plant sale is being held outside the King’s Hall (Church Piece) on 16th May from 9am – 12noon.
