Happy Dandelion Day!

To mark Dandelion Day this year, we celebrated in the only way that seemed appropriate: by dressing up as dandelions. It feels only fair to give a little attention to a plant that spends most of its life being overlooked, pulled up or described as a weed.

Because we rather love dandelions. That’s why there is one in our logo!

They may appear in lawns, cracks in pavements and flowerbeds when we aren’t expecting them, but they are one of the most important flowers we have for wildlife. Dandelions are among the first flowers to appear in spring, providing nectar and pollen at exactly the moment hungry bees and other pollinators need it most.

For bumblebees emerging after winter, a patch of dandelions can be a lifeline.

Dandelions support more than bees too. Their leaves feed insects, their seeds are eaten by birds and their deep roots help improve the soil.

And there is something about them that feels quietly joyful. Children still make dandelion clocks and blow the seeds into the air. They brighten verges and corners of gardens with their cheerful yellow flowers. They thrive where other plants struggle.

At a time when we are trying to make more space for nature in Cheltenham, perhaps dandelions are exactly the kind of plant we should appreciate more: simple, resilient and far more valuable than they are usually given credit for.

So here’s to the dandelion – one of the smallest but mightiest flowers in our town.
