We are pleased to share some positive news for everyone working to help our declining swift population.
Following an independent assessment, it has been confirmed that a swift caller, when installed and operated responsibly, does not constitute a statutory nuisance. This is excellent news for conservation groups, homeowners and community projects using callers to encourage swifts to investigate suitable nesting sites.
Responsible Use Matters
The assessment considered several important factors, including:
- The volume of the device.
- The amount of time it operates each day (typically 2–4 hours).
- The period of the year it is used (approximately April to August).
- The times of day it operates.
- Existing background noise levels in the surrounding area.
The conclusion reinforces what many swift conservationists already advocate: when used sensibly, swift callers can be an effective conservation tool without causing unreasonable disturbance.
Best Practice
Anyone considering using a swift caller should follow a few simple guidelines:
- Talk to neighbours before installing a caller and explain why it is being used.
- Be prepared to reduce the volume if anyone is affected.
- Limit operation to appropriate times, such as 8:00–10:00 am and 6:00–8:00 pm, avoiding early mornings, late evenings and overnight use.
By following these principles, it’s possible to support wildlife while remaining considerate of those living nearby.
A Wonderful Surprise….
The day ended with a lovely reminder of why these efforts matter.
Just ten minutes after the assessment was completed, six to eight swifts appeared circling over the house. Whether it was coincidence or perfect timing, it was an unforgettable sight and a wonderful boost for the project.
Helping Swifts Return
Swifts have suffered significant declines across the UK in recent decades due largely to the loss of nesting opportunities. Installing nest boxes and, where appropriate, using a caller responsibly can help these remarkable birds rediscover suitable breeding sites.
With sensible operation and consideration for neighbours, swift callers can play an important role in giving these iconic summer visitors a better future.
